Sibyl is yet another figure of fascination. Prophetesses or oracles, they firmly rooted in the pre-Christian pagan;however, they were also thought to have foretold the coming of Christ. They were often linked with caves, symbolicjunctions to the underworld. Thishinge—a point of inversion of both story and site—is something I continue toattempt with material. Upholstery foam—carved, layered, and shaped—is submerged in plaster. The plaster only penetrates the foam to a minor degree, but it is enoughto stand erect and mimic the surface of solid stone. A subtle carving into the surface reveals, acrack becomes an entrance into something unpredictable and unknowable, a placewhere prior certainties dissolve and new realities are made possible.
