Sibyl is yet another figure offascination. Prophetesses or oracles, theyfirmly rooted in the pre-Christian pagan; however, they were also thought tohave foretold the coming of Christ. Theywere often linked with caves, symbolic junctions to the underworld. This hinge—a point of inversion of both storyand site—is something I continue to attempt with material. Upholstery foam—carved, layered, and shaped—issubmerged in plaster. The plaster onlypenetrates the foam to a minor degree, but it is enough to stand erect andmimic the surface of solid stone. Asubtle carving into the surface reveals, a crack becomes an entrance intosomething unpredictable and unknowable, a place where prior certaintiesdissolve and new realities are made possible.
